Rehabilitation of a building that fully occupies a block with 595 m2, located in the center of the village of Argomil, in the district of Guarda.

The intervention aimed to adapt the entire building, including the areas previously intended to support agriculture and livestock, to single-family housing.

The block is occupied, to the north, by a two-storey house with a porch facing south, which extends to the backyard against a second house that develops from the wall that limits the land to the west. Between these two volumes, protected from the wind, is the patio, which, due to its dimensions and characteristics, allows the placement of a swimming pool

The first volume, originally intended for housing on the upper floor and for collecting animals and a barn on the ground floor, was the oldest. The second was intended exclusively to support agricultural and livestock activities

The volumetry, the functional organization and the construction techniques fit in with the traditional architecture of the area, highlighting some construction elements, such as the “conversadeiras” benches and the lining of two spans on the upper floor, which indicate an origin of several years ago. centuries ago.

The set is built with exterior and interior walls and stairs in granite masonry and some interior walls on the first floor in tabique. The floor of the ground floor was, in almost all compartments, made of compacted soil without coatings, and the floor of the upper floor was made of wood. The structure of the roofs was also made of wood covered with straw tiles.

Inspection and diagnosis actions were carried out beforehand, which made it possible to assess the state of conservation of the construction elements, thus making it possible to predict (in the project phase) the maintenance of most of the existing materials, such as the entirety of the granite masonry on the exterior walls, which was consolidated, and part of the wood used for the structure of the floors and roof.

The coating of the roofs were replaced (with a material identical to the existing one, tile canudo ceramics) and the window frames of the outer spans (in order to comply with thermal comfort requirements).
