A brief history of Sesimbra: A picturesque fishing village situated in a sheltered bay, it was founded on the hilltop around the Moorish castle that the first king of Portugal - D. Afonso Henriques - conquered in 1165. This castle is now a must-see, where you can admire a truly breathtaking view of the town and the sea.

It was the richness of Sesimbra's fish stocks that led the population to move down from the top of the hill and into its neighbourhood, turning the town into one of the region's main fishing ports.
