The Zêzere Glacier Valley, 13 km long, is one of the largest in Europe; wonderful gift of Nature and, at the same time, an open-air lesson on the remains of the last ice age, thousands of years ago.
In its «U» shape, it boasts unparalleled geological beauties, such as the austere granite rocks of Cântaros, Magro, Gordo and Raso (at 1,928 meters of altitude) and biogenetic reserves of high natural and landscape value.
At the foot of Magro (1,420 meters above sea level), a jewel of the Valley, Covão D’Ametade, an ancient glacial lagoon of incomparable beauty.
Between the winding route of the Glacier Valley, where the land no longer yields more than some grazing and small pockets of a weak subsistence agriculture, the Zêzere runs fast, escaping, daring and fearless, in a hurry to reach quieter places.
The Zêzere Glacier Valley, a deep gorge in the NNE-SSW direction, located on an important fault, is one of the best examples of how glaciers shaped the landscape: the «U» shape is due to the massive presence of ice on top of the mountain, creating something like a dome from which “tongues” poured into the peripheral valleys.
Being a glacial valley, and therefore very open, the slopes are very steep, covered with granitic balls and a chaos of rocky blocks, mainly at the base of water tongues.
At the bottom of the valley, the River Zêzere and the green pastures, which herds of sheep and goats peacefully share, harmonize the landscape. You can still see some buildings typical of the mountains (characteristic stone houses with thatched roofs made of rye straw or broom), called «courts», as well as the forest guard houses.
