Proença-a-Velha is a Portuguese village, parish of the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, in the former province of Beira Baixa.
It has an area of 58 km² and 190 inhabitants (2021 census).
Proença-a-Velha was a town and county seat between 1218 and 1836. The county consisted of the parishes of the county seat and Aldeia de Santa Margarida until the administrative reform of 1835 and São Miguel de Acha until 1752. In 1801, it had 934 inhabitants.
Among other historical and centuries-old monuments, you can visit the pillory, the clock tower, the Church of Misericórdia (over 500 years old, the third oldest in Portugal), the parish church dating from 1764, the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Granja, dating from the 14th century, the Centenary Commemorative Cross, and the Olive Oil Museum located in the urban interior of this parish, which is part of the network of museums of the Raiano Cultural Center of Idanha-a-Nova and is the result of the restoration of an old agricultural farm. This consists of olive oil presses, one archaic and the other mechanized, a barn, haystacks, a hardware silo, pigsties, and other divisions.
Important monuments from the Roman era include the bridge, with its simple lines and beautiful granite arches spanning the Torto River, and the Roman roads in the vicinity of the parish.
Fountains and water fountains played an important role in the daily lives of the people of Proença. Noteworthy are the Chafariz Novo (Longe) fountain for its size, the Chafariz da Devesa fountain for its design, the Chafariz dos Pirolitos fountain for its originality, and the Chafariz de S. Sebastião fountain, built during the Estado Novo period and located near the site of the old chapel of the same name. As for the Fonte da Goma, we can highlight its beauty, grandeur, and its constant connection to the people of Proença-a-Velha.
The parish also has some public wells that were once very useful to the population, notably the Perolado, the Arregaça, and the Poço Novo.
