Flor da Rosa is a small village in the municipality of Crato, located in a region with strong potential for appreciation, particularly due to the construction of the Pisão Dam, located approximately 15 km away. It is also around 30 km from Portalegre, close to Castelo de Vide, Marvão and Spain.
This village and its monastery are traditionally associated with the birthplace of the Holy Constable, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, as his father, D. Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, lived there while serving as Prior of Crato.
Rich in architectural heritage, Flor da Rosa is home not only to the Monastery of Santa Maria de Flor da Rosa, founded by D. Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira in 1356, but also to two 15th-century fountains — Álamo Fountain and Branca Fountain — whose waters were once used to supply the local population and animals, as well as two Baroque manor houses (one of which has been converted into a rural tourism establishment).
Also noteworthy are the traditional local houses, the elegant manor houses with Baroque influences, and the church where the tomb of D. Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, father of the Constable D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, can be found.
The village also features a pillory, located at the crossroads towards Alagoa, and a statue of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, situated next to National Road No. 245, inaugurated on 15 August 1975.
A village with a strong tradition in pottery craftsmanship, Flor da Rosa has 14 certified pieces recognised as genuine Flor da Rosa pottery, and still maintains an active pottery school.
Tourism is undoubtedly the main local activity.
Although small in size, this village is rich in traditions and knowledge. It is also known as “the land of potters”, due to its unique tradition of working with clay. The local pottery heritage remains alive through the existing pottery school, despite only two potters currently continuing to independently produce and sell their handmade clay pieces.
The Legend Behind the Name Flor da RosaLong ago, there was a small settlement where a noble and respected knight lived, admired by both the nobility and the local people. One day, the knight became seriously ill and it was believed that he had only a few days left to live. Because he was so loved, many people visited him and brought him gifts.
Among those visitors was a woman named Rosa, who brought him a flower bearing her own name. For the knight, this was the most beautiful gift and the most special visit, as Rosa was his fiancée.
Everyone awaited the knight’s death, but fate can sometimes be unpredictable, and it was Rosa who passed away while he recovered. From that day onwards, the knight was often found crying beside his beloved’s grave. Eventually, his grief overcame him, and as he approached the end of his life, he made two final wishes: that the flower Rosa had given him should accompany him to his grave, and that the place should be named Flor da Rosa in honour of his beloved.
This property could become your enchanted retreat, perfect for family holidays, group stays, weekend getaways, or simply escaping the city and enjoying the very best that Portugal has to offer.
