Afonso Henriques definitively conquered Torres Novas from the Arabs and, on October 1, 1190, D. Sancho I assigned him the first charter and had his castle rebuilt, which had been extremely devastated. Later, in 1376, D. Fernando ordered its reconstruction, after the wars with Castile. It was exactly around the castle that the first settlement of Torres Novas was constituted. Along the fence, a set of walls that surrounded the fortress and defended it from enemy attacks, there were four arches or shutters, which functioned as the main arteries to and from the village. This primitive urban structure remained largely constant until the 16th century, because although there was a demographic increase, the population occupied the spaces still available within the wall, essentially next to the church of Salvador. Fátima "the angel of Portugal" Fatima's story really begins in 1916, when her three young children, Lúcia, a nine-year-old girl, Francisco, an eight-year-old boy and Jacinta, a six-year-old girl; they went to the Cova de Iria valley, near the village of Fátima, in Portugal. On that particular day, in the early spring of 1916, it started to rain, so the children climbed one side of the hill south of the valley to a natural cave called "Cabeço".
